Linzer3 asked:
I'd like to try stone carving, but I don't know what I'm doing--is there a way to find local sculptors for classes? I already tried locals colleges etc with no luck. Also, I know you can buy soapstone and alabaster etc over the internet and pay a ton for shipping, but is there any stone that I can just drive to and buy locally (or dig up myself)??

There are rock shops in Metairie and Lafayette that can sell you different kinds of stone to practice on. Probably others closer that I don’t know about. They can also tell you what kinds of native stone would work in your area and where to find it. Try serpentine too. You may want to work your way up to marble, it’s pretty unforgiving. Most good art supply stores can sell you carving tools. The Red River Sculpture Society includes some sculptors in Louisiana, and they should be able to steer you to some lessons. They have a good web site. Good luck.

Since there isn’t a GREAT BIG INTEREST in learning to sculpt it makes it hard to locate a class.
Have you done other types of sculpting? paper, clay, paper mache, plaster, etc?? Those are good to start with.
Most people who do sculpt even make their own tools because of the lack of material made for them.
Do lots of reading and sometims there are sources for materials in the backs of the books.
good luck
