  1. ..mm… i find them often.. there aren’t any specific type of stone they used,… they seem to have use what ever fit there hand.
    Identifying a hammer-stone is easy enough.. there are obvious ‘strike’ points on the hammer, there are often even ‘flakes’ knocked off it, and there are sometimes numerous other strikers laying around that have served that purpose.
    The implement used to knock a ‘workable’ flake off a source rock, doesn’t have the same function as a ‘hammer-stone’ has…
    the hammer was used to knock diminishing sized chips from a fairly substantial sized piece of fractured material, to reach a rough-out, that could be finished by a variety of more precise means.
    the hammer’s composition needed only to be hardy enough to knock off fragments of what ever was being worked on..

    My drive way is covered with the remains of my attempts to learn that art.. what a challenge!! The implements certainly influence the end results.
    Be open minded… THEY certainly were!!
