I’ve avoided swallowing any thus far. I did have a chip get stuck in my eye the other day though. I once read that Ishi would hit himself violently in the back of the head while holding the eye open. I tried it and it worked. Kinda gave me a headache though…

Video is awesome I have been trying to learn knapping by figuring it out on my own….not working to well. Hope none of those flakes end up in your Coors….Obsidian to sharp for your throat man.

It does two things. First, by supporting the flake from underneath, it allows me to hit the stone as hard as I need to without breaking the point in two. So all I’m doing supporting the piece. Second, it allows me to “catch” the flake I’m removing so they don’t go flying off, making a mess, and/or cuting myself. The flakes also seem to terminate clean because they aren’t “trapped” in the pad.

  4. It looks like you are putting pressure under the piece (delta) you are removing with your finger. Does that help or is it just to keep the piece from falling?
