I found this very small maybe inch and a half carved stone "idle" at a beach in Massachusetts you can tell it has been worn by the sea. I am very curious as to what it could be or where it came from.

here is a picture: http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m77/thechickenmonkey/Thing.jpg

Thank you

Does anyone have a recipe for making Soft Stone for carving?

March 29th, 2009 admin Posted in Sculpture 1 Comment »

Scooter asked:

A couple of year ago I attended a Stone carving workshop. We made a mixture that consisted of plaster paris, cement and other ingrediants. This mixture was poured into a box and allowed to set. The end result was a soft stone that we then used for carving and making a small sculpture. I've lost the recipe and wondered if anyone could give me one.

Rianna S asked:

Maybe its just me but there seems to be very few people that are still interested in stone carving, making it very hard to get any information about. I would love to learn how to make stone carvings and sculptures but I have no idea where to begin.

of course most people would understand what you meant if you just said "stone carving", but is there a different name for this type of art?

What kind of stone is best for carving?

storytllr1961 asked:

I'd like to try carving stone, but just miniatures, things under six inches. I don't have access to stone like marble so I am wondering if there is any kind of stone that I would likely just find on a beach or something like that that is good for carving. Any ideas, fellow artist?

How can I find stone / rock to carve? Where can I find carving lessons in Shreveport, Louisiana?

I'd like to try stone carving, but I don't know what I'm doing--is there a way to find local sculptors for classes? I already tried locals colleges etc with no luck. Also, I know you can buy soapstone and alabaster etc over the internet and pay a ton for shipping, but is there any stone that I can just drive to and buy locally (or dig up myself)??
