Archaeology research project ideas needed?

Ryan R asked:

I have to do a research project on archaeology and I need to do it on something I can do a session on so like if I did it on flint knapping I would need to have tried to do it. If I did it on Indian Mounds I would need to make one... Anyone have any ideas, I was thinking of making a small pyramid and then writting my paper on that. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks!

  1. You could do it on crystal skulls.

  2. Stone tool making is great fun, but not something you can learn in a week.

Here is an idea for a fun and simple project your class might learn from:

    1. get three flower pots of different shapes and sizes, which are all the same color.

    2. shatter them, mixing the fragments together thoroughly.

    3. Spend 5 minutes trying to re-fit them, count the number of sherds you managed to reasssemble and how many vessels (of the original three) were represented. Write down the these numbers and under the amount of time used to do the re-fitting.

    4. Repeat step #3 until all or almost all of the sherds have been refitted.

    5. graphically illustrate the relationship between the amount of time invested in an analysis of ceramic fragments and the results.

    7. Present your results with the following in mind:
    a. Archaeological sites rarely have all of the fragments of any artifact within them – Imagine how easy it might be to mistakenly analyze the number of vessels represented – how might this improve with investing more time in the analysis based on your results.
    b. Read an archaeological report or journal article involving ancient ceramics and critically reflect on the analysis based on what you learned.
